Michiana | Solo Saxophone
Michiana is a small beach town situated on the boarder between the states of Michigan and Indiana. Michiana exploits a feeling of nostalgia to illustrate a state of joyful melancholy. The compositions are influenced by archival American folk recordings and the work of Joanna Newsom, Jose Gonzalez, Devendra Banhart, and Bill Callahan.
Zongo Junction
Zongo Junction is generating a well-deserved buzz in NYC’s burgeoning afrobeat scene. The ensemble blends West African rhythms with funk, jazz and soul. True to their inspiration, Nigerian superstar, political activist and afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the outfit excites dance floors wherever they perform.
The critics agree. “The only thing Zongo Junction has to do to start a legitimate dance party is show up and plug in…anyone within a square block earshot of this Ford-tough funk factory would be hard pressed not to join in the hoopla,” says the Bay Area’s SF Station. “Sheer energy, with a brawny horn section that played unison lines with the force of a tractor-trailer and a rhythm section that roared with power and noise.” Says the Village Voice.
The band, 12 pieces in total, has toured extensively throughout the East and West coats. Including a sold out show at Slim’s in San Francisco on December 30, 2010, a Monday night residency at Brooklyn Bowl in June 2011 and a recent tour supporting Asheville, NC heavyweights, Toubab Krewe.
Reed’s Bass Drum
Reed’s Bass Drum is a Brooklyn based jazz collective focused on composing music as dialogue for baritone saxophone, bass and drums. The defining use of baritone saxophone and the ever-present intuitive dialogue between the members of the trio has contributed to a musical persona that is all their own.
Steven Lugerner Dectet
Complimented by the New York Times as “An impeccably trained multi-reedist, with an emphasis on ‘multi,’” instrumentalist & composer Steven Lugerner has become a strong personality in New York City’s contemporary music scene. His debut album Narratives, which features a septet of musical colleagues, was released to critical acclaim in 2011 with subsequent New York performances and West Coast tours. Lugerner has since capitalized on the concept of multiples by expanding this septet into a full 10-piece band. At five horns, two guitars and a piano trio, Narratives is now a band that hopes to explore the extremities between dense ensemble playing, solo improvisations, freely improvised textures and harmonious through composed passages.
